Your Brain on Mental Health:

A Map of the Mind’s Trouble Spots

Did you know that your brain’s geography can shape your emotional world? Different mental health disorders are often linked to specific regions of the brain—like neighborhoods that govern certain moods, thoughts, and behaviors.

Graphic of a brain

Schizophrenia

Take the amygdala, for example: this almond-shaped cluster deep in your brain is your fear center. Overactivity here is often associated with anxiety disorders and PTSD, making individuals more sensitive to threats—real or perceived.

Meanwhile, the prefrontal cortex, the brain's “CEO” in charge of planning and decision-making, tends to underperform in ADHD and depression, leading to poor impulse control and difficulty concentrating.

One fascinating area is the hippocampus, which helps form new memories. In people with major depression, the hippocampus can actually shrink over time due to chronic stress. Fortunately, treatment—like therapy and medication—has been shown to help it recover.

The brains of people with schizophrenia often show reduced connectivity between different regions, almost like a city where traffic lights have stopped working. This may contribute to disorganized thinking and hallucinations.

At THW, your well-being is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to providing compassionate, personalized care that meets you where you are—emotionally and physically.

Our experienced providers understand the complexity of mental health and approach each patient with empathy, respect, and clinical expertise.

Through secure virtual sessions, we offer accessible, high-quality support designed to help you navigate life’s challenges and achieve lasting mental wellness. You are not alone—we’re here to walk with you every step of the way.
